Dear Friends of Folk: We are so glad to announce that we have joined up with a fantastic group of musicians who play Celtic & Appalachian instrumentals with a “new-age twist.” While we continue to perform as a duo (Cece and Ruth), we are now also performing as part of a six-piece combo: The Birch Creek Band. Here’s how it happened (such a typical story in the folk world…) In 2009, the band called Cece, looking for a Bodhran player (Irish frame drum) for an open mic feature at Roaring Brook Nature Center. What the heck, I’m usually game for anything, so I agreed. When I went to a practice, I was amazed at the talent and the sound produced by the band. Brian, Kevin, Sandra & Aleks met at a local Farm Aid concert, and found their music blended beautifully. With dulcimer, bouzouki, mandolin, guitar, bass, dobro & flute, they play ethereal Celtic & smoky backwoods Appalachian instrumentals. Realizing at the Roaring Brook open mic feature gig that the band needed both vocalists and a “front man,” Ruth and I stepped up to the plate and were honored to be accepted with open arms by this troupe of consummate pros. In return for our vocals, they've begun to arrange multi-instrument back-up for some of our ballads, and we expect our combined repertoire to continue mingling and expanding over time. Since that magical first gig, we’ve played as a 6-piece band at Brian’s Autumn Concert, performed three shows at the Winsted Boar’s Head Festival, played in concert at Roaring Brook in Canton, and are looking at future bookings (see schedule page on this website, click “subscribe” on home page to be added to our mailing list). Please visit the band’s website www.birchcreekband.com for more info on these folks, and to hear clips of some of the tunes. We look forward to many gigs, both as a duo and as part of The Birch Creek Band. Thanks for your support of live music! Cece & Ruth |
